Chapter 10
Day 3, October 30
Niko
As we drove away from Julius and Michelaâs place, I was concerned for them and hoped that their distance from town would keep them out of harm's way, at least for a while. They were good people, and had been friends of Annika and I since we moved to the island.
We headed north, back toward the KIRO station to get across the portage and back onto Vashon. I kept my speeds slow so that we could all get one more look at the station as we drove by. I did have Liz turn her head and face away and put up the hood of her raincoat so that any guards wouldnât see her in the car. No reason to risk raising questions at this stage.
As we passed, the thought of having foreign invaders on our island raised an anger inside me. Iâve always been very slow to anger, generally what most people would label a ânice guyâ and I liked helping people, but deep down I consider myself a patriot. I love my country strongly and have many friends in the military. Something must be done to drive these invaders off our island. The country was already rocked by the EMP, and thousands of people would die and suffer because of its effects due to starvation, lack of medical care, and violence. America had not seen a war on its land since the Civil War, but it seemed like that was changing . I thought of all the friends I have in the military and wished them safety through this turmoil . It was time to sound the clarion call for all Americans, for good men and women, to step up and defend our land. On our isolated little island, war had come calling. It was up to us to answer that call, somehow.
Liz asked me a question that raised me out of my thoughts, âEarth to Niko, are you okay? You zoned out a minute on us there. I was curious if you guys had seen much violence or looting here yet?â
âNo, not yet, thankfully. Generally, most folks on the island are peaceful, and there are a lot of folks that volunteer and lend help to others in need. It will be interesting to see what happens when almost everyone, including those folks, are in need. The health and welfare infrastructure is going to be stretched thin to the point of snapping, Iâm afraid over the next weeks, but so far there havenât been any real problems you might see on the mainland. Lots of anger and fear settling in, but most of these people are the type to stand out on the corner with a sign in protest or write a letter to the editor of the local newspaper the Beachcomber then pick up a rock and smash a window, or overturn a car. Iâm not saying it might not happen, but the remoteness and nature of the population has bought us a little time and provided a buffer for now.
